University Link Community Meeting
Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009
6 8 p.m. (presentation begins at 6:30 p.m.)
Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI - McCurdy Gallery)
2700 24th Avenue E
Seattle, WA 98112
This Wednesday is your chance to learn about the University Link light rail station design and the upcoming Burke-Gilman Trail closure. With an additional 70,000 daily riders projected on the U-line by 2030, the number of people who bicycle to and from the station will be significant. Attend Sound Transit’s meeting to make sure your voice is heard about some of the following concerns:
- Station Design: Will the UW station support the growing demand for bicycling and walking? Will there be enough bicycle parking and supportive infrastructure?
- Construction Mitigation: How will Sound Transit ensure bicyclists and pedestrians are supported throughout the construction phase?
- Project Planning: How do the SR520 and U-Link station project areas overlap, and how is nonmotorized access being addressed?

Green River Trail Closure - In an effort to help prevent flooding in the Green River Valley, the City of Kent will place 20,000 giant sandbags along the Green River levee beginning October 7. The bags will be in place by November 1.
Frager Road between S. 200th Street and Washington Avenue/West Valley Highway can be used as an alternate route, while the Interurban Trail between the north and south City limits will also serve north-south bicyclists and pedestrians. East-west access roads will include S. 200th/196th, S. 212th Street, James and Meeker Streets.
It is unknown how long the Green River Trail will be restricted. The giant sandbags may remain in place until the Corps has completed repairs to the dam, which could be up to five years. [Full project details]

Burke-Gilman Detour - On Thursday, September 10 and Friday, September 11 a detour will be in place on a section of the Burke-Gilman Trail in Kenmore while crews complete utility work across the trail. The detour will begin just east of 65th Avenue NE and will route trail users onto designated areas of NE 175th St. between 65th Ave. NE and 68th Ave. NE. At 68th Ave. NE, trail users will be detoured north to reconnect with the Burke-Gilman Trail. Signage, cones and flaggers will be in place to help trail users safely navigate the area. Utility work will continue into early next week; however, the detour should be removed prior to the weekend.

Route change on Alaskan Way S. - Bicycle riders using Alaskan Way S. between S. Atlantic Street and S. Massachusetts Street should be aware of a slight route change. Construction has narrowed this section of Alaskan Way S. to one lane in each direction with no turn lanes, bike lanes, shoulders or sidewalks.
To allow bicycles and pedestrians to travel safely through the construction zone, crews built a new temporary multi-use path on the east side of the road. The path is protected by a concrete barrier. Bicyclists and pedestrians should access the temporary path at the signed crosswalks just to the north and south of the construction zone. This change will be in place for several months.
This work is part of the project to replace the southern mile of the Alaskan Way Viaduct beginning in 2010. [Full project details]

Lake Washington Loop Trail closed Thursday night - Crews will pave a short section of the Lake Washington Loop Trail south of Coal Creek Parkway. The trail will be closed 11 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20 4 a.m., Friday, Aug. 21. Work needs to be done at night to avoid significant delays to pedestrians and bicyclists on the trail, since paving will close the trail. Paving is weather-dependent.
Expect occasional night work through October as crews finish the drainage project, restore the trail, build walls and work on fencing. While construction continues, trail users may experience brief delays and flaggers Monday Friday 7 a.m. 5 p.m. For your own safety and that of work crews, please follow flaggers’ direction.
Work is expected to wrap up by the end of October, weather-permitting.

Myrtle Edwards Park, Hempfest - To maintain the safety and enjoyment of all visitors to Myrtle Edwards Park, bicyclists will be asked to dismount and walk their bicycles through Myrtle Edwards Park during the setup for Hempfest and during the event itself. For this reason, cyclists may want to plan for more time to cover the 1.25-mile trail.
Beginning Friday, Aug. 14 at 6 a.m. until Monday, Aug. 17 at 3 p.m., the park will be crowded both with vendors setting up for the event and with event attendees. For these four days, signs in the park will direct cyclists to dismount and walk their bicycles through the park.
City and event officials advise great courtesy and caution, as there will be vehicles of all types and pedestrians making their way through the park in preparation for the event starting Tuesday, Aug. 11, through the event, and dismantling the event through Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Burke-Gilman Trail disruption - A 150-foot portion of the paved trail along Lake Washington between NE 125th St. and NE 135th St. will be fenced off for about 10 days starting Monday, according to the city Parks and Recreation Department. Trail users will be directed to an unpaved path along the east side of the trail. Bicyclists will be asked to dismount and walk.
The construction is needed to install a rock buttress on a hillside above the trail where groundwater seepage and erosion have caused landslides, the Parks Department said.

Second Avenue lane closure - Drivers and bicyclists who use Second Avenue in downtown Seattle should plan their trips carefully, allow extra time, and consider alternate routes starting July 14, and for the next four weeks. The Seattle Department of Transportation is paving Second Avenue, one of several downtown streets being improved this summer.
SDOTs contractor is restricting Second Avenue to two lanes and on July 14 will shift work to the east side of the street between Pike Street and South Washington Street. With only two lanes available, and buses loading in the curb lane, only one lane will effectively be open to through traffic. Work will progress on Second Avenue from north to south, from Pike Street to S. Washington Street. [Full project details]

Trail closure along Alaskan Way S. - Starting on Monday, July 13, crews will drill three holes in the multi-use path that runs adjacent to the Alaskan Way Viaduct. The section of the multi-use path between S. Royal Brougham Way and S. Dearborn Street will be closed approximately Monday through Friday (July 13-17).
Detour routes will be clearly identified; bicycle traffic will be diverted to Alaskan Way S., and pedestrian traffic will be diverted across the street to the sidewalk on the west side of Alaskan Way S. Signage will be placed near the path one day in advance to notify cyclists and pedestrians about the closure and detour.
Excavation will take between three and five business days to complete; all work will occur between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Chip Seal to Begin in North Olympic Hill Neighborhood - Bicyclists and motorcyclists should use extreme caution this summer when riding on streets in Seattle that will be newly chip-sealed, due to the large amount of loose gravel. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) recommends that bicyclists and motorcyclists use alternate routes when possible, until the streets are swept.
Starting July 9 or as soon as warm, dry weather is forecast, and for approximately two weeks, SDOT crews will reseal approximately 17 lane miles of selected streets in the North Olympic Hills neighborhood, between NE 135th Street and NE 145th Street, and between I-5 and Lake City Way. The crews will position Loose Gravel, 10 MPH signs at entrances to this area. [Full project details]

Burke-Gilman Trail Closure - Seattle City Light has been able to move up its work to replace a 200-foot steel lattice tower on the north side of the Lake Washington Ship Canal. During the work, the Burke Gilman Trail must be closed intermittently for safety reasons while workers are on the tower.
The closures will take place daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting Wednesday, July 8, and should be completed by Friday, July 17. Work will not be done on weekends and the trail will be open and unaffected during non-working times.
The trail will be closed between Fremont Ave. N. and Phinney Ave. N.
For westbound pedestrians and bicyclists, it will be easiest to avoid the closed area by using N. 34th St. from Stone Way N.
City Light began this four to five-month project earlier this month to replace old wooden power poles with stronger steel ones on both sides of the Ship Canal and to upgrade the high voltage power lines that cross over it between two 200-foot towers. The trail was closed for several days to move overhead wires and do preparatory work on the towers. The final closing of the trail for this project will occur in August, but it will be shortened significantly by the work beginning July 8.

East Duwamish Waterway Bridge Project - SDOT began construction on the E Duwamish Waterway Bridge on Thursday, April 23, 2009. The bridge crosses the East Duwamish Waterway on SW Spokane Street just west of E Marginal Way S. During construction the sidewalk on the south side (eastbound direction) of the bridge will be closed for the entire duration of this project and also during the construction of the East Marginal Way Grade Separation funded and managed by the Port of Seattle. Bicyclists are advised to follow the signs along SW Spokane Street and Klickitat Avenue SW and utilize the designated crosswalk to cross over to the north side of the bridge where they can share the sidewalk with westbound travelers. Bicyclists, using extreme caution, may also choose to ride in the roadway along with motor vehicles.
The bridge will remain open to traffic throughout the construction period, with two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane open during peak travel times. During non-peak nighttime hours or weekends, the bridge may occasionally be further reduced to one lane in each direction. Construction began April 23, 2009 and is anticipated to end in February 2010. [Full project details]

Keeeping bikes and pedestrians moving during I-90 closures - Bicyclists and pedestrians depend on the I-90 floating bridge to get across Lake Washington. Keeping the bike trail open is one of WSDOT’s top priorities, even as they begin important safety improvements to the bridge.
In May and June, WSDOT will be replacing expansion joints on the I-90 Homer Hadley Bridge, which carries the bike path, westbound mainline and the express lanes. During the July closure, WSDOT ill be providing two temporary bridges, one at each end of the floating bridge, to maintain access for bicyclists and pedestrians. The May closure will not affect the bike path. [Full project details]
