Announcement
8/18/10 Cedar River Trail closure - The Cedar River Trail will be closed 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. between 201st Pl SE and 16916 Renton-Maple Valley Hwy/SR-169 on the following dates:

• Wednesday, August 18th – Saturday, August 21st

• Monday August 23rd – Saturday, August 28th

• Monday August 20th – Friday, September 3rd

The trail closure is necessary to construct the Belmondo Revetment Repair project. This project will maintain and improve 260 lineal feet (LF) of an eroding revetment facility. Heavy construction equipment will occupy the trail, and trucks will haul between 201st Place SE and the access driveway to the residence at 16916 Renton-Maple Valley Road SE.

8/9/10 Cedar River Trail closure - A portion of a levee along the Cedar River near Renton that protects State Route 169 and other important public infrastructure and was damaged during wintertime flooding is being repaired before the next flood season.

In order to repair the levee, King County must close its Cedar River Trail from Aug. 16 to Sept. 3 while the work is under way.

The trail will be closed to all use between 154th Place Southeast and 175th Avenue Southeast, just east of Renton's Ron Regis Park. The trail will be closed 24 hours a day, and there will be no flagged reroute during construction.
8/9/10 Issaquah-Hobart Road detour to repair retaining wall - Southbound Issaquah-Hobart Road is closed under SR 18 while crews replace a retaining wall that washed out in the January 2009 floods. Signs will direct bicyclists onto the shoulder of westbound SR 18 to 244th Avenue SE, then onto SE 216th Street back to Issaquah-Hobart Road. The length of the detour is approximately five miles. Please see the attached map for clarification.

This detour will be in place for the month of August. It does not affect northbound cyclists on Issaquah-Hobart Road. Because of the roadway constraints and limited sight distance, it’s not safe to allow cyclists to use the northbound lane.

Maintenance crews have swept the shoulder of westbound SR 18 so it should be clear of debris. [Full project details]
8/5/10 I-90 Bridge closure - The I-90 Bridge will be closed at various times during SeaFair, Aug. 5 - Aug. 8
8/5/10 Ballard Bridge painting - Painting of the Ballard Bridge will potentially start Monday, Aug. 9. The sidewalks will be closed around the clock for three weeks on each side, although they will be reopened for weekend use.

Bicyclists are encouraged to detour to either the Ballard Locks or the Fremont Bridge. Alternately, bicyclists may use the sidewalk not being painted; however, due to the narrowness of the sidewalks and the contra-flow bike traffic, bicyclists will be required to dismount and walk their bikes across the bridge.
8/5/10 Hempfest at Myrtle Edwards and Elliott Bay Parks - Load-in, Aug. 17 - 20 and load-out, Aug. 23 - 25: Morning commute hours from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. should remain unaffected. Outside those hours, however, there may be brief delays to accommodate vehicles or equipment. Flaggers will be onsite.
7/28/10 Frager Road closure - Frager Road in Tukwilla, from S. 200th Street north to the Mitchell Moving and Storage facility, is closed to cyclists and all traffic. Frager Road will be closed until the project is completed which could be at the end of 2011. The recommended detour route for bicyclists is the Interurban Trail, however in our communications with the City of Tukwila, there are no current plans to provide bicycle route detour signage.

Please take a moment to send an e-mail to Mike Mathia (Public Works project manager at mmathia@ci.tukwila.wa.us) indicating the importance of alternate routes and signage for bicyclists throughout the closure.
7/28/10 The City of Mercer Island will close 4400 Block of East Mercer Way on Tuesday, Aug. 3 (weather permitting) from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., except for a brief period between 12 p.m. and 12:30 p.m., to remove a tree that has been dropping limbs near the roadway at East Mercer Way. [more...]
6/14/10 Burke-Gilman Trail closure - Seattle City Light is planning to restore two 200-foot steel lattice towers, one on the Fremont side of the Ship Canal near N. 34th and Phinney Ave. N.; the other on the Queen Anne side, near Warren Ave. N. and Nickerson. The work will involve a safety buffer area beneath the towers and staging of equipment on either side. Consequently, a portion of the Burke-Gilman Trail and the Ship Canal Trail in those areas will be closed intermittently between mid-July and the end of September.

Seattle City Light recognizes the inconvenience to bicyclists and pedestrians. The work will be done as quickly and safely as possible. Signs and barriers will be used to promote a detour around the areas. Project updates can be found at: http://www.seattle.gov/light/aboutus/construction/

6/1/10 NE 45th Street Viaduct Closure - SDOT is closing the NE 45th St. viaduct from June 14 – Sept. 10, 2010 to replace the west approach. Alternate routes have been established for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit. A signed bike detour is planned as are improvements along the bike detour route. The Burke-Gilman Trail beneath the viaduct will remain open throughout the project. More information is available on the project website.

Cascade Bicycle Club will offer a comprehensive program of commuter stations, classes, and bike rides to encourage bicycle trips, during the project and beyond.
6/1/10 SR 520 Trail Reopening in Overlake - The SR 520 Trail between 148th Ave NE and NE 40th St in Redmond reopened to bicyclists and walkers on Friday, May 28 at 2 p.m. It is important to note that construction activity will be continuing on the NE 36th St Bridge and intermittent closures will be necessary as part of this project. How short-term closures are handled will be determined by the type of construction activity taking place. For specific questions about the construction project, please contact Project Manager Dennis Apland, dapland@redmond.gov.

More information available below.
5/25/10 Southworth Dr. Reconstruction (Harper Dock to S. E. Olympiad) - Construction on Southworth Dr. will begin the week of Monday, May 24 and extend into September.

The Kitsap County Road Department will be encouraging vehicular traffic to detour to Sedgwick/Hwy 160, but will not be signing an alternative route for bicyclists. The roadway itself will will remain open for vehicular traffic (at times, one lane only), so expect delays of up to 20 minutes. It is advised that riders walk bikes through the area. The roadway will most likely have two open lanes on evenings and weekends. The contractor has been asked to not pulverize the roadway until the very end of the project in order to keep it open as long as possible, but expect hazards and exercise extreme caution if you must use this route.

This Southworth Dr. project has been a long time coming and following an inconvenient summer, the upside will be continuous minimum 4-foot shoulders from the Ferry all the way into Port Orchard on both sides of the roadway. [Full project details]
5/14/10 SR 520 Tail Improvements - A current project will temporarily affect the SR 520 Trail at the intersection of West Lake Sammamish Parkway/Leary Way/SR520 westbound ramp. Beginning Wednesday, May 12 through Friday, May 14 City of Redmond contractor, Watson Asphalt Paving, will be constructing a temporary bike ramp on the NW corner of West Lake Sammamish Parkway and the SR520 ramp.

Once complete (expected Friday, May 14), bikes will be routed around the NW corner concrete sidewalk area (on the temporary ramp) through approximately Wednesday, May 19.

The project (LEAP 220 / Project 101406) will: realign the crosswalk/Bike 520 trail crossing; improve wheelchair ramps; modify signage at the intersection of West Lake Sammamish Parkway/Leary Way/SR520 westbound ramps; and reduce conflicts between right-turning vehicles and pedestrians/bicyclists in the crosswalk

For specific questions about the construction project, please contact Project Manager Joe O'Leary at jpoleary@redmond.gov or 425-556-2738.
5/10/10 Ship Canal Trail improvements - Seattle Dept. of Transportation has asked the contractor working on the Ship Canal Trail to make some final adjustments to the new extension of the Ship Canal Trail.

The work will require closing the part of the trail that is between 6th Avenue West and 11th Avenue West, from Monday, May 10 to Friday, May 14. The contractor will extend the fence and fix damaged concrete in the newly constructed section of the trail.Trail users are asked to obey the signs and stay off this portion of the trail until the freshly poured concrete is cured. [Full project details]
5/5/10 Sammamish River Trail closure - A portion of Sammamish River Trail just north of Marymoor Park needs repairs, and King County is closing that stretch of the trail May 3-14 to ensure continued trail user safety. During construction, there will be lane closures, but at least one lane on S Dearborn Street will be open for traffic at all times in both directions. Some temporary side street closures and traffic restrictions will be necessary. [Full project details]
4/29/10 15th Ave. NE Bridge closure - Starting on Monday, May 17, 2010, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will close the 15th Avenue NE Bridge (located at NE 105th Street, across Thornton Creek) to all traffic so that crews can make necessary structural repairs and correct erosion problems along the slope of the ravine under the bridge. During the 11-month construction period, the bridge will be closed to all traffic, including bicycles and pedestrians. Traffic will be diverted to Roosevelt Way NE, Lake City Way NE/SR 522, and Northgate Way. Detour signs will be posted throughout the area and closure signs and information flyers will be posted at each end of the bridge to help pedestrians and cyclists identify the detour route. [Full project details]
4/27/10 Burke-Gilman Trail disruption - Construction work will block part of the Burke-Gilman Trail between Monday, May 3 and Wednesday, May 5. There will be a 6-foot path for bicyclists and pedestrians and a flagger on duty during construction hours. No holes will be left on the trail overnight.
4/22/10 2010 Ballard Bridge Painting Project - SDOT plans to paint the north and south approaches to the Ballard Bridge in 2010 as part of its Annual Bridge Painting. The painting will provide for enhanced aesthetic appeal as well as protect the steel bridge elements for an additional 15 years against corrosion and other weather deterioration.
