The Report Card on Bicycling - Seattle 2009
Download the Report Card on Bicycling in Seattle (PDF)
Objective: The Report Card on Bicycling in Seattle was developed to answer and present our findings to the following questions:
- Has the City implemented the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan according to their benchmarks?
- How satisfied are Seattle’s cyclists with the various elements of the bicycling environment? What areas demand prioritization of the City’s and CBC’s efforts?
What: The Cascade Bicycle Club developed the Report Card on Bicycling in Seattle as a way to present the City’s progress toward becoming a bike-friendly community, but also to bring awareness to relevant issues as they pertain to bicycling---- from the perspective of those who bike. Ultimately, the findings identified in this Report Card will drive Cascade’s future advocacy efforts to ensure that our cyclist’s concerns are at the forefront of our agenda. The Report Card presents both City of Seattle Bicycle data and perceptions from a sample population of Seattle’s cyclists, derived from Cascade’s on-line Bicycle Report Card Survey. This survey received over 600 responses from Seattle cyclists.
Who: The Report Card is intended for multiple audiences.
- CASCADE: The findings will be used to drive Cascade’s advocacy efforts. It is an indicator report telling us where the City is at with respect to achieving its Seattle Bicycle Master Plan goals, and informing us as to the concerns of Seattle’s bicycle community. For instance, ‘Insufficient Pavement Quality and Street Maintenance’ were identified by CBC’s survey respondents as being a major concern with cycling in Seattle. This information will inform Cascade’s work to ensure pavement quality and street maintenance are a top priority for the City of Seattle.
- COMMUNITY: In the Report Card presents data to the community about how the City is doing with implementation of the Seattle Bicycle master Plan. The Report Card is also used to illustrate to the community that Cascade is responding to and advocating for their needs as cyclists.
- CITY: We will use this document to illustrate the work we are doing as an advocacy organization, but also to serve as a tool for our advocacy efforts. We will distribute the Report to City leaders who have the ability to address the issues that we have identified as being underserved.
When: We will announce the ‘release’ of the Report Card on Bicycling at Bike to Work Day both at the morning rally and the after party. While the Report will exist primarily as an on-line document, we will have a handful of copies to hand out to selected people, and flyers to distribute to the general public (directing them to view the full report on the Cascade website).
We plan to develop the Report Card on Bicycling every two years, as a way to track the City’s progress toward achieving its Seattle Bicycle Master Plan goals, and to determine if this progress is being reflected through the perceptions of the bicycling community.
Why: We are tracking what is happening in the City of Seattle and we are responsive to our cyclists’ needs.
